Painting is an ever-evolving personal journey. A lot of small breakthroughs that go unnoticed eventually result in big changes. The biggest step for me was to learn to look at the work objectively and ask, What are my intentions? What is my story and how am I going to tell it? What elements of design will I emphasize? In my early paintings I had a tendency to paint the same area over and over with similar results. I finally passed the IQ test by realizing that I had to try something completely different to make a positive change. Now if something isn’t working, I will do the opposite of what was painted in the bothersome area. A busy area becomes calm, one that is high in color intensity becomes neutral, and so on.
